Greater Outdoors Project Winner Selected

Aug 11, 2008

Last Friday night I had the pleasure of announcing the winner of the Greater Outdoors Project at a special concert hosted by Redwood Creek at the Summer Outdoor Retail Show in Salt Lake City, UT. You voted and in the end the Southeast Wisconsin Chapter of Trout Unlimited walked away with the $50,000 grant and a national advertising campaign in National Geographic Adventure and Outside Magazines. The SEWTU plans to use the money to help restore Camp Creek, a world-renown fishing and recreation spot about an hour from Milwaukee.  In a very close second was Friends of the Cheat, taking home a $10,000 runner-up prize.

I would like to thank you for all of your votes and for your support of the Greater Outdoors project. All of our finalists were truly worthy organizations and I encourage you to visit their web pages and get involved if you can. My everyday job is to bring you fantastic wines that embody the spirit of the Great Outdoors, but I have to say that being able to support organizations like these is among the most rewarding things I do at Redwood Creek.

Thanks again and hope to see you at the creek. I’m off to try my luck with the trout now!

Cal, I can't tell you enough how excited all of us at Southeast Wisconsin Trout Unlimited are to be partnering with Redwood Creek.  Thanks to you, the Camp Creek Restoration Project is going to be spectacular!  I can't wait 'til you make it out to the Driftless Area in Wisconsin to see for yourself.  Thanks Again,

    Michael Kuhr (SEWTU)

Congratulations! The work that they do is very reminiscent of something that Jimmy Carter once said: "It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature's gifts, the joys and beauties of the
outdoors will be here forever." We can only hope, and TRY!

    Carrie --

That hits it on the head exactly.

Doing good work, for the sake of doing good work, spreads the message, and gets others involved.  What SEWTU does is a sight to behold -- fathers, sons, men and women of all ages, coming together to work on habitat restoration projects for little more than a pat on the back, the satisfaction of something good accomplished, and a free bratwurst.  It's about as roll-up-your-sleeves Midwestern as it comes.

The more people behave selflessly on the weekends, the more likely they are to carry it back into their next week, and the more likely the good is to spread.  THAT'S what it's about.
