Update from NOLA - City Park

Oct 2, 2009

Here is an update from our friends at NOLA City Park - winners of GOP 2009

As we look forward to the heat of the summer to finally break, we've been in a planning and eradicating mode in Couturie Forest. We are making plans to utilize the funds from Redwood Creek and other donated funds to plant well over 1,000 trees in the forest this fall/winter. In the meantime, we continue with the eradication of invasive species; primarily Chinese Tallow and Giant Ragweed. Volunteers continue to lay mulch on the trails so that the forest can be enjoyed by all.

Our plans for the forest are award winning. The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) recently held their annual convention and awards ceremony in Chicago. The landscape architects for the project, Mossop and Michaels, won the ASLA's equivalent of an Academy Award when they were awarded the ASLA's Award of Excellence for Planning.

I am so excited about this - can't wait to see the finished product!  I live in the neighborhood and drive by the park each day!

Couturie Forest was always an urban jewel in the rough.  The Redwood Creek project sounds like it will really polish up the place and make it shine to its full potential.  I'm so excited.  Imagine, a thousand new trees, an award-winning design!  Wow!  (After all I voted for the Forest and helped this project win the Redwood Creek prize.  I have to be excited, right?)
